Media sharing has exploded onto the web in the past few years. So what are some of the sites that are out there? The following have been broken down into catagories.

 

Video Sharing

1. YouTube (www.youtube.com)

  • one of the most popular video sharing websites out there
  • easily upload your video and provides automatic compression and formating

2. Vimeo (www.vimeo.com)

  • less popular that youtube
  • better for people to upload videos for digital portfolio's
  • more professional than youtube

3. Yahoo! Video (video.yahoo.com)

  • Yahoo!'s answer to YouTube
  • pretty much a YouTube clone

4. Metacafe (www.metacafe.com)

  • yet another YouTube clone
  • has TV show clips, not full episodes
  • a little more organized front page that YouTube

Image Sharing

1. Picasa (picasa.google.com)

  • create, tag and share your photos
  • easily ties into your personal Google website or on your Blogspot blog
  • Google controlled

2. FFFFOUND! (ffffound.com)

  • invitation only photo tagging and sharing
  • controlled environment
  • more artistically driven, not too many of Joe Bob's vacation photos on here

3. Flickr (www.flickr.com)

  • similar to Picasa
  • easily share, tag, search, and connect with other people
  • Flickr maps, tag photos of locations
  • Yahoo! controlled

 

Hybrid Sharing - sites that include both image and video sharing

1. SmugMug (www.smugmug.com)

  • geared towards professional photographers and cinematographers
  • site not loaded with spaming style ads
  • full HD support

2. TinyPic (tinypic.com)

  • fair amount of open content and submission (nice way of saying there is a lot of garbage on here)
  • easily tie into Facebook, Myspace, Wordpress, etc

3. Treemo (www.treemo.com)

  • offers mobile device sharing
  • offers widgets for your website to tie into your account

4. Photobucket (www.photobucket.com)

  • large amount of content
  • sometimes NSFW content appears in generic searches (NSFW = Not Safe For Work)

  • create music stations based on your likes, share with friends
  • the service itself offers suggestions to your station based on your preferences
  • completely increases your musical library
  • RSS feed to update your Facebook or website
